Highlights!

I know, I haven’t posted in a week… I’ve been too crazy this week to even breathe. Catching up after a conference can be difficult- I’m not looking forward to March when I travel almost back-to-back.  I’ll just catch up with week highlights:

Monday

Got rear-ended- Happy Monday to me!  The Nissan was just scratched up a bit, but the 4-runner that hit me wasn’t in great shape.

Tuesday:

Was a sickly girl.  Did end up booking my plane tickets to Portland for January. Found out if I want to have a “comfort seat” in economy (i.e. a seat in the first 3 rows), it’ll cost me an extra $80.  Really, Delta? Really.

It was also the only day I skipped my #RWRunStreak 1-mile.  I just couldn’t get myself out the door with the way I felt. Luckily my coordinator picked up my slack, so I counted it!

Wednesday:

Felt so much better Wednesday morning, and wanted to make up for missing my mile the day before.  I rocked out 5 like a champ, and set a new PR:

At work, one of my staffers brought me a soy latte- Jordan, you’re the best!!

That night, my “work wife” and I had our weekly wife date (for the first time in 3 weeks…).  We made great friends with the bartender too, which definitely has its perks!

Thursday:

I broke into my new flavor of Spark- Mango strawberry.  Delicousness in powder-form.

Lunch was outstanding- Syd and I went to Salad Creations- they make amazing chopped salads.

That night, we had a dinner with the construction crew that built our building.  It was so much fun, and we enjoyed conversation, wine, and great food at Mozaik.  Highly recommend this restaurant- it does have veggie and vegan options too!

Friday: 

By far my busiest work day.  I barely had time to squeeze in my mile and a quick TRX circuit in between meetings. 

After work, some of the staff headed out to check out one of my Building Supervisors’ art work. Demi is very talented and I’m so proud that they put her piece on display during the First Friday event.  The pro staff all met at Fermentation Lounge for a quick drink before we went to check out the art.  Kellie brought angel paws with:

Saturday:

Kellie and I met for a distance run.  We started off with the two of us and the two Lauren’s, but they were both going to a class at 11 and only did the first few miles with us.  Kellie and I knocked out 9- it was a PR for me, but with the hills, the pace, and a few other elements like my left quad hurting and the onset of congestion, the run was one of the worst ones I’ve done in awhile.  Kellie too- she rubbed her ankle so raw she was bleeding when we were done.

Now I’m just being lazy, sitting on my couch, really not moving- yet.  I need to bake my green beans and get into an ugly sweater before my staff holiday party tonight.  I’m sure that’ll happen- eventually.  🙂

The Big Easy

Was soooo much fun.  I loved Athletic Business.  And there were more Campus Rec colleagues there than I anticipated.  Here’s the recap:

We left Wednesday morning and got into New Orleans that afternoon.  It was strange to have to drive so far to get to NOLA- I’m used to a 3.5 hour trip and voila!  There.  Not so much in this case. 

Our hotel was beautiful- I’ve been to NOLA quite a bit and never stayed at the Renaissance

That night we went to dinner with Precor Vendor.  Bill Martin is our rep for FSU- he is one of my fav vendor reps as he checks in often, takes care of any issues that come up almost immediately and clues me into new opportunities with equipment, technology, etc.  He definitely takes care of us!  The blondies get in a pic with Bill:

LT, Lo and I got a lot of “are you 3 sisters??” the entire time we were in NOLA.  Nope, just work together and  play together! We did have a lot of fun in that city together and with the rest of our crew.  I feel like I got to know the FSU staff much better and we all had such a great time!

Later that night I NEEDED to take a picture with this chicken.  It was clearly a matter of life or death.

Many of my breakfasts were meal replacement shakes and apples- I didn’t want to pay the buffet price ($17 breakfast) or deal with the calories buffets bring.

Lo and I went to our first session together- on Charismatic Leadership.  The session was an hour and a half and was so amazing- we were both iPad typing like maniacs the whole time!  By the end of the session I had to pee so bad but didn’t want to miss a thing he said!  We’re going to take the information we got from that presentation and adapt it into our own to submit for FSU’s spring staff training. 

Went to a few more sessions and then met my old UWF crew for lunch.  We picked up quite a few alums to join us and we all had a blast catching up!  Miss them!  

Lunch was at a restaurant in the garden district that has amazing po-boys.  I got a fried green tomato with remoulade – very Big Easy-ish. It was the size of my arm.  I ate half then had to stop.

That afternoon I got all spandexed-up and got ready for the Trade Show.  It was actually pretty comparable to what I’ve seen at NIRSA conferences.  

The Expo Halls are fun- got to test out new equipment and products and connect with all of our vendors.  My first stop was precor and I got to see the new technology they’re featuring for all of the pieces we already have.  THAT’S exciting- we will already be getting upgrades.  I ran through the demos to learn the user and admin sides, then talked to consultants about when we could schedule our upgrades.

I spent 4 hours in the Expo Hall trying out equipment. Billy, one of my fav Woodway reps and I decided to race each other on their new biking system.  The system is an advanced trainer for those that are cyclists but I thought it was a pretty cool system (and I’m not a cyclist).  It showed exertion for each leg, heart rate, power, and much more…

Later that night we went to dinner with Life Fitness vendors- to a place called Mannings that had pretty good food but was booked.  We sat outside and that night was pretty cold.  We all huddled under heaters for dinner then decided to hit up the Athletic Business’ social and dance ourselves warm again!  

The next morning, LT, Lo and I made a quick trip to Cafe du Monde.  Lo had never been before but we never thought about the fact that she has a gluten free diet and couldn’t eat the beignets!  She didn’t care though, and we got in our “touristy” NOLA Cafe du Monde trip.

When we got back to the Conference Center, we stopped for Starbucks and I got a free vanilla latte!  It reminded me of the principle of Surprise and Delight that Starbucks employs and that my former supervisor, Christine, loves so much!

We hit up the Expo Hall again that afternoon to try out Octane’s lateral trainer.  The lateral trainer is like an elliptical but the legs go out side to side instead of front-to-back.  We all tried it out- it definitely works out your outer thighs and glutes!  Lo gets a demo from an Octane rep:

After conference and before dinner that night, Lo, LT, and I decided we wanted to run by the river – it was supposedly a great running route and very scenic.  We should have known we were going to have a very strange run when on the elevator on the way down to the hotel lobby, a European gentleman was dressed EXACTLY like LT and I- in white tank tops and black cropped pants, and asked us if we had on singlets. Things just went south from there.  

I almost got ran over by a vehicle that blew through a stop sign going at least 45mph.  I should have been scared for my life, but those things just make me mad and push me harder.  We kept going- trying to access the riverwalk by the conference center.  We went up the stairs, into the mall, back out of the mall, back down the same stairs, took another wrong turn and just didn’t know where to go.  The whole time Santa Claus in coveralls was watching the three blondes laughing and running in circles.  We finally found our way to the french quarter and the riverwalk.  NOLA was definitely not ready for 3 blondes to be running throughout downtown.  We got strange looks, lots of comments, and made a group of small schoolchildren scream when we passed by them.  By the time we got back to the hotel we were laughing so hard it prompted a gentleman getting on the elevator with us to ask: “Is it safe to get on this elevator?” (which made us laugh harder).  Quite the run, I’m telling you.

After dinner that night, the FSU crew decided to try our luck at Harrah’s.  I’m not a big gambler, but I do view casino’s as cost of entertainments and decided to spend a little.  It was really fun.  I played some roulette by myself for awhile.  I ended up losing $60 at the table but met some guys from Texas that were keeping me laughing the whole time.  I walked away and found a couple of our crew to play blackjack with.  Mike Collins and I tag-teamed it and I ended up making back about $40 that I lost at roulette.  We had a blast.

Crazy EMT Situation:

On our way out of the casino for the night, I ran into the restroom, and noticed a lady that was passed out inside her stall.  No one seemed to care that she was down, but CPR training kicked in immediately and I began care for her while I yelled at the custodian to call 911.  Luckily, she was breathing but she was in and out of consciousness so I stayed with her.  Another lady came up to me and asked if she could assist.  I asked if she was CPR certified- she was so we tag-teamed medical care for the woman on the floor.  However, when the “EMT” got there (aka, most likely casino staff with the letters E, M, T on his shirt), I was miffed that he didn’t have any medical supplies with him, and his “care” was to ask if she was ok (she was mumbling by this time), and yanking her by her arms into a standing position.  Then I got really angry and asked him over and over if he was “really an EMT” while the lady assisting me kept saying “I don’t think you are!!”  There was nothing we could really do about the situation though, and the woman was conscious.  The lady assisting me I talked to for a bit and found out she also worked in Campus Rec at University of Illinois- Chicago.  We are both instructor certified, and were both upset at the way the situation was handled, but we did get to bond over that experience.  Always look for the silver lining.  

The next day, we set back for Tallahassee.  We’d had a blast, bonded as a team, gotten some good sessions in, and been able to have fun demoing in the Expo Hall.  ABC = success! 

When we got back, I was due for a long run.  I had been very good about continuing my #RWRunningStreak while in NOLA, but they had mainly been short runs due to time constraint.  It felt good to get in some distance.  And the holiday lights were breathtaking in my neighborhood.  I did miss running with my blondie friends though!

Last night I slept like the dead and I have almost no motivation today.  I did get to pick up my “Pup-Chow” (that nickname is going to stick) from her dog sitter (aka, adopted daddy).  She absolutely loves David.  

Time to switch laundry over, go grocery shopping, and bake some cookies! 

“Stop Being So Dramatic”

Said my personal trainer to me this morning….and I looked at him and burst out laughing.  He’s so freaking awesome.  And doesn’t put up with my BS.  Props to my trainer… he is definitely what I need for early morning workouts!

That workout felt like eons ago. I’m so tired, it’s been a long day. To be fair, I had a tough workout this morning:

1 mile progressive treadmill run #RWRunStreak (and through downtown Chicago on the Woodway)

Band-assisted pull ups- 3 sets to exhaustion (this was the “warmup”- and also where I began to get a little dramatic…)

Incline bench

Shoulder press

Tricep extensions

Bicep curls

Powerplate crunches

And then, I died.  

After I died, came back to life, and attempted to lift my arms to wash my hair; I shook up Meal Replacement shakes.  Love them, they’re filling and taste great.

This morning I sat in on fitness instructor auditions (so fun to watch- and I definitely admire people who teach group fitness, I have zero coordination), then went to sweepings presentations to SGA to support our Recreation initiatives and present healthy campus initiatives.

I spent the afternoon in meetings, catching up with vendors that were passing through on their way to New Orleans, and taking care of projects that needed done before I leave tomorrow. 

Headed to the Athletic Business Conference in New Orleans tomorrow.  I’m excited- I’ve never been to this one, I hear it’s a great professional development conference, and I’m super excited about the fitness equipment expo to check out all the new trends!  Should be a good time – although I definitely can’t promise blogging everyday while I’m there.  I’ll do one “super blog” on Sunday recapping NOLA. 

I dropped Laney off with her dog-sitter, one of my students, David.  He’s already calling her “Pup-Chow”- a term of endearment- and she was best friends with him after 3 minutes.  I think when I get back this weekend she won’t want to come back home! 

Dinner when I got home was a tortilla-bean-tomato bake that I totally made up.  It turned out ok, but I was too tired to really try to care.

Afterwards got to packing.  I’m terrible at that.  I tend to just not care and everything gets thrown into a duffel bag- then I hope and pray when I get there that I have what I need.  It tends to workout (usually).  At least I’m not the only one stressing about packing… Lo at least has me covered if I need it!

One more shoutout tonight- one of my former students and brilliant friends helped with my published article by combing through for grammar.  VERY appreciated- thanks so much Gabriel!  

And on that note, I’m exhausted… I’ll take plenty of pictures and do a recap this weekend, but looking forward to New Orleans and seeing good friends! 

My Legs Hate Me.

2 days after a long run is always the worst in terms of soreness- I’m not sure what compelled me to run Doak Stadiums today, but I sure did.  And my legs definitely hate me for it.  

I had trouble getting time or motivation to eat lunch today for some reason.  I got caught up in work, Supervisor evals, etc and just wasn’t motivated to hunt/gather food :).  I ended up with an apple before stadiums for energy and an apple after.

I got to experience the cleaning of the stadium after a huge game- it took a 11-man team.  So crazy.

Had to check in on Dave today- he had lost a bet with some friends at UF and sure enough… he wasn’t thrilled about his attire today. I had to see for myself.  Good sport!

I finally got home today and couldn’t bring myself for another mile- too tired and not enough energy.  I headed straight for food.  Dinner was a steam-in-bag meal: Couscous with spinach and lemon/olive oil light sauce.  I added avocado and egg because I was craving calories, fat, and protein.

Got to work writing a publication for one of the organization’s I hold a leadership role in.  My best work is done 1) with candlelight and 2) with a glass of wine.  True story.  And the candle smells like christmas cookie.  Lovely!

All finished with my first draft, completely exhausted, and trying to mentally prepare myself for early-morning training sesh tomorrow (first one after Thanksgiving is going to be ridiculous I’m sure- and… my personal trainer told me that on my way out of the gym today). Time for bed! 

 

I’m Thankful for… Thanksgiving Vacation!

Can’t wait to start my short vacation and see my family and friends!  I love when the 5 of my family members are together- and this year with Thanksgiving at the Villages, I’m anticipating golf cart races :).

This morning I hit snooze 5 times.  I couldn’t drag myself out of bed for anything.  I think I was battling the “2 day later” soreness after my Sunday mileage.  I Sparked, and it helped a little but my bod is still dragging.

Breakfast was banana, oatmeal, cinnamon, pie spice, almond milk, muesli.  Kept me full until 11:30am

Lot of wellness discussions this morning- amongst FSU staff, national colleagues, and the Stanford Wellness staff particularly.  Excited about possibilities for expanding wellness initiatives, and the conversations are scheduled to continue (next week, after we stuff ourselves silly with turkey- or tofurkey in my case!). 

Lunch today was leftovers (hey, have to clean out my fridge for the rest of this week…)

I challenged my staff to the Runners World Challenge- FMC style.  They can do 1+ miles every day of anything- run, walk, swim, bike, elliptical, etc.  They just fill out the form so I can keep track and anyone who (honestly) completes the challenge will get a prize!  If you want to play, join in and fill out the form (click on the picture below)- instructions are on the form (*unfortunately I can only guarantee prizes to my staff, but maybe someday if I get enough blog readership!) For now you’ll get shoutouts 🙂

Nike shoe update:  Love em.  Never ever said that about a pair of Nikes, but the Frees are light and comfortable.  I haven’t tried to run or crosstrain in them but for everyday use, they are comfortable.

You Know You Have a Bad Day When…

…Your car explodes clothing.  Luckily this wasn’t me today but I felt terrible for this poor guy whose car exploded (clothing…).  Your guess is as good as mine.

I woke up feeling about 75 years old.  I hurt everywhere from this weekend’s activities.

I had an early morning meeting with the Director of Wellness, then had to rush to get out to the Rez for our staff meeting and holiday potluck.  

Potlucks are kind of bad news for me- I really want to eat everything!  I have to practice extreme self-discipline (especially around mac and cheese).  I did eat some sweet potato casserole though (I mean, it IS the holidays!)

Dave proves he sometimes eats some vegetables.  I like giving him a hard time about it- he’s a good sport and he does like to tell me all the days he doesn’t drink soda (of which I’m very proud… 😉 ).

After the potluck I came back to a present–  Nike Frees…I wonder if I’ll be able to tolerate them?  I love Nike products, minus the shoes…which tend to hurt my feet.  I’ll try them out though and let you know. I also had a new gym bag and some headbands waiting for me.  Love Nike!

Worked until 6, then headed home for the nightly Laney-April run.  Not as many acorns on the ground, and homegirl was real disappointed. 

Afterwards, I went in search of some Dreaming Tree.  I love Dreaming Tree- it’s one of my favorite wines and tonight I just really wanted a glass.  Didn’t find any, but I did discover a Syrah blend from France. And the name is freaking cool “The Wolftrap”.  Anything “wolf-y” reminds me of my brother (who I get to see soon!).  

Dinner tonight was easy.  Target’s Archer Farms Whole Grain Blend and Publix Veggie Medley.  Tear, pierce, use methods of violence to cook and viola!

10-Mile Trail Run and Spoonfuls of Peanut Butter

Breakfast this morning was a fallback- oatmeal, a scoop of peanut butter, banana, and muesli.  Microwave for one minute.

I told Kellie I wanted to run with her this morning.  She’s been good about mixing up my running experiences.  She took me to Miccosukee Trail this morning.  It was absolutely beautiful.  Mostly wooded trail.  And the miles flew by as we ran through the woods.

Stats: 10 miles

Avg pace: 9:54 min mile

Calories expended: 1188

We were super inconsistent this morning, some miles were 10:30, some were 8:40.  When we ran St. Marks trail a few weeks ago, we were so consistent in pace each mile was only a few seconds off (for 9 miles).  I’m guessing it was the hills and varied terrain at Miccosukee. 

My hips and knees were screaming at me after Ultimate yesterday and 10 miles today.  

When I got home, this text was waiting for me.  Kellie and I are two peas in a pod (only she’s the more in-shape, competitive pea).

I eat peanut butter out of the jar.  All the time. 

I needed to make lunch and something for our staff holiday potluck tomorrow.  Lunch was fettucine, broccoli, pesto, avocado, and egg.  Was delicious after my run.

For the potluck, I’m making a pumpkin cheesecake pie:

1 package of sugar free cheescake flavored jello

1 can of pure pumpkin

1 graham cracker crust

Pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon to taste

Lite whipped cream and pecans

1.  Follow the directions on the box.  I substitute water for milk though (it tastes and mixes exactly the same).

2.  Add the pumpkin to the mix.

4.  Spread evenly in crust, then pop in fridge to set.

Who Brings a Blow-Up Doll to a Bar?

The answer is… these people.  See the doll?  I hope it was some sort of bachelor/bachelorette party last night.

ANYWAY… met my colleagues at Fermentation Lounge after work – they feature an eclectic atmosphere and serve a wide variety of beer.

I decided on this fruity concoction that features blueberry and pear flavors (on a tip from Sydney). It was delish!

Afterwards I met my cousin at a sushi bar then we went to Wine Loft for a drink (where clearly the night took a turn for the…weird).  

This morning I got to sleep in until 8am- it felt amazing.  Breakfast was something I’ve been wanting to try for awhile- Oats in a Jar. I had an empty jar from a while ago, and added cut-up apple, unsweetened almond milk, and instant oatmeal.  Popped in the microwave for 1 minute, mix all together and viola! Oats in a Jar.

Later on, went to support one of my Building Supervisors as the Noles Club Softball team took on the Gators.   Megna is President of the club and plays 2nd base.

They played well but didn’t end up winning the first game.  I left before the second game to go play Ultimate Frisbee with some of the facilities and fitness staff. 

Ultimate teams were pretty evenly matched- and when you add in the level of competitiveness you find from people that work at a gym– well, we ended up playing for a couple hours before someone FINALLY said, “This goal will be Golden Goal!”  (Thank god, I’m def older than the staff and feeling these sprints up and down the field).  Was a blast though and was a great workout!

I worked up quite the appetite with that workout, and ran home for a late Mexican-inspired lunch:

Time for some grocery shopping- I’m completely out of food! 

Scary Sleep-Walkers and Scary Sleep-Talkers

Funny, we had a conversation at work this morning about sleep walking and sleep talking–then I came across this “How Health Savvy Are You?” Quiz and one question pertains to sleep walking.  I’ve been sleep walking before and locked myself out of a hotel room (little scary).  My personal trainer has been sleep-talking before about killing his roommate (I told him I’d rather he take his fury out on me than that!).  My mother used to perform exorcisms in her sleep (talk about scary!!). Do you have a weird sleep walking or talking habit?

Fun quiz.  I’m at Health Guru status, by the way.  I know, I’m awesome.

This morning required Spark.  And Catalyst.  And Ibuprofen.  I felt like I got ran over by a semi after my workout yesterday.

Driving into Tallahassee when it’s dark and peaceful is so nice. And our Capitol building was looking festive…

I told Forrest I had to role out of bed- that’s how much I hurt.  His response (typical): “Well, you’re going to hurt a lot more after this.”

He wasn’t lying.  Extreme circuit today- was awesome and I can’t even recall everything we did but we sure got some of everything: Powerplate, VipR, Total Body, TRX, Kettlebell, etc, etc.  I can’t feel anything right now.  I’m surprised I can type.

Breakfast was a banana and Meal Replacement- Vanilla.

Busy morning meeting with students and SGA. Luckily I remembered to grab an apple for mid-morning before I started running around like a mad woman.

When I finally made it back, I had a late lunch of salad (and forgot dressing).  I really didn’t know what to do, but I do have honey in my cabinet, so I figured, what the heck? Why not!

It was… weird.

After a meeting with Athletic Trainers, I got a tour of the Human Performance Lab at FSU.  Saw the anti-gravity treadmill, the Dexa, and the balance machine.  I love exercise testing, sometimes I think I missed my calling in that realm.

It’s been a LONG day… looking forward to getting home to my Laney girl and figuring out what dinner should be tonight!

“Run Annie Run” (THAT’S What Killed Me Today)

The Healthy Campus meeting was so much fun.  Everyone had great ideas and is willing to contribute to make our campus healthier.  Exciting!

Right after the meeting, Kellie- our Marketing Coordinator and crazy competitive workout freak of nature (all love, Kel, all love…)- convinced me to workout with her.  1) I had zero plans of working out until my nightly dog run; therefore had zero workout clothes with me and 2) am not even close to the fitness level Kellie is.  I agreed though…

First, we maxed out sets of 5 squatting.  I maxed with 3 sets of 5 at 165 lbs.  I think Kellie was at 220…

Then we maxed out sets of 5 reps bench press.  I maxed with 3 sets of 5 at 100 lbs.  Proud moment…wait for it… Kellie maxed at 80.  I couldn’t believe it…definitely a fluke today if I could outlift her in anything!  

She then showed me how to use the Jammer machine.  I mean, attempted to show me.  Or showed me and I just made a fool out of myself trying to get my form right. 

After our weight session, we got our heart rates up (WAY up!) with “Run Annie Run”.  The exercise consisted of 200 unders in jump rope, 50 situps, one lap around the track.  Come back and descend the ladder- 160 unders, 40 situps, one lap around the track; then 120 unders, 30 situps, one lap around the track (you get the idea).  

By the end of the session I really just wanted to know- WHO is this Annie that I’m cursing and why did she create a program of cardio torture???  🙂  Then I told Kellie we should do that every Monday/Wednesday.  I may have  a little of the Kellie-workout-freak in me. 

On the way out the door our Group Exercise Coordinator gave me one of the old body bars for my office (since yesterday I was in Kellie’s office doing deadlifts with her body bar- in my skirt.  I’m classy).

My afternoon was spent doing Supervisor evaluations.  It really just made me so grateful that I have such wonderful and competent student supervisors working for me.

I got all preachy about greasy BBQ just to tease him, but he just grinned and stuck a forkful of pork in his mouth.  So much for that…

Got home to run Laney and make my dinner. I’m going to have to put Laney on an acorn cleanse I think.  She’s addicted.  My dinner was leftover couscous with avocado.  I wasn’t too creative and I did already eat some veggies, so figured I didn’t have to try to hard tonight.
